Eagles - Eagles coach Reid upbeat at Pro Bowl
KAPOLEI, Hawaii - Andy Reid has been here before. Too many times for the likes of Eagles fans.

Reid is the coach of the NFC Pro Bowl team, which means Philadelphia lost the conference championship game to the Arizona Cardinals and came agonizingly close to the Super Bowl.

By yesterday, the warmth of Hawaii had tempered much of the disappointment from this past season. Reid spoke briefly with reporters after putting the NFC's best through a quick workout.

"Obviously, you want to be in the Super Bowl," a cheerful Reid said. "But these guys get you going."

Defensive backs coach Sean McDermott is handling the coordinator chores this week in the absence of Jim Johnson, who is undergoing treatment after a recent diagnosis of melanoma that has metastasized to his spine. Reid said Johnson is doing well.

"Jim's in a great frame of mind," Reid said. "He'll be ready when we get back there. Sean's going to do it here, so we're all set for now."

Reid expressed confidence in McDermott's ability to handle the job as long as necessary.

"Sean's been an understudy of Jim's for a number of years, and he works so hard," Reid said. "He's coached all the positions except defensive line."

Offensively, Reid said, he has a good reason to stick to a ground game Sunday: Adrian Peterson, the Vikings running back who was MVP of last year's Pro Bowl.

"We're going to run it 400 times," Reid said. "At the team meeting, I asked him how much he wanted to carry it. He said 'every time.' He's bright-eyed, vicious."

Eagles president Joe Banner has told anyone willing to listen that the team plans no major changes headed into next season. Reid didn't have much of interest to add yesterday.

"We just need to keep getting better," he said. "That'll be our challenge, to have consistency through the year." *
