Eagles Notebook: Eagles' Rocca doesn't pack much punt this time
CINCINNATI - The Bengals enjoyed better field position than the Eagles as the fourth quarter and then overtime dragged along yesterday, and a good bit of that was Sav Rocca's fault.

Andy Reid really isn't kidding when he talks about everyone having a piece of the failure pie - last week it was the run defense, giving up 219 yards to the Giants. This week those guys were great; Cincinnati ran 30 times for 56 yards.

Yesterday, Rocca carved off a slice. The Australian punter has been the most consistent element of the Eagles' offense all season. Coming into yesterday, he ranked second in the NFC with a 40.0-yard net. But in a swirling, biting crosswind at Paul Brown Stadium, Rocca could manage just a 31.1-yard net on a whopping 10 punts, which brought back unpleasant memories of how inconsistent he became last season when the weather turned cold. Several punts near the end were shanked left, out of bounds, including a 17-yarder from his 49, launched with 1 minute, 56 seconds left in regulation.

Rocca's last two punts of OT were 34- and 37-yarders, setting the Bengals up at their 45 and 41. This meant that on the exchange, the Birds' last two possessions (not counting the final-play Hail Mary after the missed Cincinnati field goal) started at their 12 and their 13, which gave no chance at all to a misfiring offense.

"I was just trying to get them between the hash[mark] and the boundary, but that wind just kept dragging it across, and they went out of bounds, obviously," Rocca said of his late boots. "That's probably the hardest wind I've had to punt in."

The game started with a west-southwesterly wind measured at 15 mph that knocked the 38-degree temperature down to a 29-degree wind-chill reading.

"I tried to lower my ball drop a little bit" to drive through the wind, Rocca said. "I couldn't get any to come off right. Obviously, you want to put your best punt down there, so you can give your team the best opportunity."

Chapman observedBengals receiver Antonio Chapman left the field strapped to a board after colliding with Eagles strong safety Quintin Mikell and middle linebacker Stewart Bradley, who forced a fumble, with 3:11 left in the first half.

The Bengals announced that Chapman had full use of his extremities after suffering a cervical spine injury. He was to be kept overnight for observation at an area hospital.

BirdseedThe Eagles' eight sacks gave them 36 for the season. Darren Howard, with two yesterday, now has eight . . . Referee Tony Corrente's assertion that Sheldon Brown led with his helmet on his penalized hit of Ryan Fitzpatrick was not borne out by replays, which sure seemed to show Brown making contact with his right shoulder. The 15-yard penalty gave the Bengals a 47-yard field-goal shot at winning, with 13 seconds left in overtime, but Shayne Graham missed for just the second time this season . . . T.J. Houshmandzadeh caught a dozen passes for 149 yards and the Bengals' only touchdown. *
