The Second Baptist Football team can scratch one goal off the list.

The Eagles clinched the TAPPS District II-Division 4 title last week with a 14-7 victory over Concordia Lutheran. Second Baptist (8-2) was a perfect 6-0 in league play.

"Winning district was our first goal," said Second Baptist head coach Mike Sneed, "but we have several more left."

The Eagles open the TAPPS Division II playoffs at home on Friday against Austin Hyde Park Baptist (4-6). Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

Sneed said Hyde Park has a reputation for being a high-powered passing team, but he's more concerned about his own squad.

"Right now, we're probably a little physically beat up," Sneed said. "We have a couple of injuries that are slowing us down, but probably no more so than some other teams."

Sneed said Second Baptist should be in fine shape on Friday night, if its defense executes as well as last week. The Eagles' front four, featuring defensive ends David Berry and Andrew Pruet and tackles Kevin Smith and Walker Young, applied the heat against Concordia Lutheran.

Cornerbacks Chris Brown and Tom Peacock were equally disruptive, causing a 3-for-20 passing night by the Crusaders' quarterback Josh Christian.

"By stopping the run, we made it difficult for them to throw the ball," Sneed said.

Second Baptist has a dynamic quarterback in Connor Wood. Wood completed 16 of 25 passes for 237 yards and a 24-yard touchdown pass to John Doughtie. He also scored on a two-yard run.

"We probably could have scored a few more times, but we turned the ball over," Sneed said. "That's something we need to continue to work on."

Westside starts playoff drive vs. Eisenhower

The Westside Football team kicks off the Class 5A-Division I playoffs this week against a familiar foe.

For the second straight year, Westside (5-3) will face District 20-5A champion Eisenhower in the opener. The game will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday at Turner Stadium in Humble.

Westside head coach Mark Byrd hopes for a better outcome than in last year's 38-24 loss to the Eagles.

"I'm not sure if Eisenhower is as strong as last year, but they're still a top 20 team," Byrd said. "Talent-wise, we don't stack up with them. It's a mismatch."

Byrd's assessment of his team sounds all-too-familiar. He said the same thing the past two weeks, but the Wolves still found a way to win. Westside followed up its recent 28-27 upset win over Madison with an equally exciting 31-28 victory over Chavez last week. That allowed the Wolves to earn a share of the District 20-5A crown with Lamar and Madison.

"We've played two games that went down to the wire and found a way to win," Byrd said. "It proves you can't measure kids by how big they are, but by the size of their hearts."

Westside's defense used a bend-but-don't-break philosophy against Chavez. Linebackers Mike Airwadi and Chad Thompson racked up 20 and 16 tackles, respectively, while defensive back James Anassi grabbed a pair of interceptions.

Offensively, Otis Seals ran for two touchdowns and threw for another. However, Chavez clamped down on Westside's running game, in particular running back Frank Williams.

"We have to control the ball better (against Eisenhower) and we need to get Frank more involved," Byrd said. "We have to keep their offense off the field."

St. John's wins SPC field hockey title

The St. John's field hockey team ended a 27-year drought last week, claiming the Southwest Preparatory Conference title for the first time since 1981.

But St. John's head field hockey coach Craig Chambers said the Mavericks' latest title didn't come easily.

St. John's edged Dallas Greenhill 1-0 in the opener and blanked Oklahoma City Casady 2-0 in the semifinals to reach the championship game against defending champion Dallas Hockaday.

Fans were treated to an instant classic. St. John's battled Hockaday through two scoreless overtimes before winning 3-1 in best-of-five strokes. Catherine Franklin, Kelley Harrison and Mary Harrison each scored during the first three rounds, while goalie Shanice Beasley pitched a shutout.

"It's difficult playing three games in two days against this caliber of competition," Chambers said. "It's physically grueling and mentally exhausting - especially when you only have 1 ? hours between matches. But our players would not be denied."

Chambers gave much of the credit to Beasley, who made save after save during the tournament, and the defense anchored by Hannah Clarke, Sydney Collie, Paige Hawley and Kristine Incavo.

Offensively, St. John's (13-3) was led by the midfield line, featuring Franklin, the Harrison sisters and Hayden Foutch. Charlotte Iupe was one of several forwards who saw action.

"It took all 22 players to get the job done," Chambers said. "Right now, I'm proud of all of them."

Kinkaid shut out at SPCs

Kinkaid's sports teams were shut out at last week's Southwest Preparatory Conference Championships in Fort Worth.

The girls cross country team saw its three-year run of titles snapped by Austin St. Stephen's, which won with 70 points. Dallas Greenhill took second with 97 points, followed by Episcopal School of Dallas third with 103, St. John's fourth with 112, Kinkaid fifth with 122 and Episcopal sixth with 164.

Ilana Leuchtag earned all-conference honors, placing 11th with a time of 12:36.70.

Kinkaid's boys cross country team came in sixth overall. Austin St. Andrew's was the boys' team winner with 93 points, with Dallas Greenhill second with 95, San Antonio St. Mary's Hall third with 111, St. John's fourth with 152, Episcopal School of Dallas fifth with 166 and Kinkaid sixth with 178. Episcopal was 13th overall with 291.

Matt Johnson was the Falcons' top finisher, coming in 21st in 17:37.50.

The Kinkaid field hockey team placed seventh overall. The Falcons lost to Fort Worth Trinity Valley 3-0 and Austin St. Stephen's 1-0 before beating Episcopal School of Dallas 2-1 in the seventh-place match.

The boys volleyball team came in eighth after going 0-for-3. The Falcons lost to St. John's 25-4, 25-19, 25-16 in the seventh-place match.

The girls volleyball team went 0-for-2 in the Division II bracket.

Kinkaid Football ends with win

The Kinkaid Football team concluded the season with its first back-to-back wins.

Soaring after a 24-22 victory over rival St. John's, the Falcons (4-5, 2-3) finished off Oklahoma City Casady 21-18 last week.

John Ed McGee threw touchdown passes of 12 yards to Michael Atmar and 26 yards to Connor Harrell. William Campbell also scored on a 27-yard interception return to lead Kinkaid.

After a 1-4 start, the Falcons won three of their last four games.

Second Baptist girls hoopsters 2-0

The Second Baptist girls basketball team has looked impressive so far.

"We have four starters back and have added a couple other players," said Second Baptist head coach Kirk Boettcher. "We're probably 10 to 15 points better than we were last year."

Second Baptist opened the season with a 64-44 victory against Incarnate Word. Jennifer Doughtie poured in 20 points and Leslie Slaughter added 12 for the Eagles.

Doughtie delivered 17 points and Kendall Shanklin 10 as Second Baptist drubbed Duchesne 58-14.

But Boettcher said Maddie Peveto, a sophomore guard, is the top newcomer, netting nine points in both games.

"With Maddie on the court, we've got serious firepower," Boettcher said.

Second Baptist will compete in the John Cooper Tournament today through Saturday.

Westside runners 9th at regionals

The Westside boys cross country team lost to Lamar at the District 20-5A meet, but the Wolves exacted their revenge at the Class 5A-Region III meet last week at North Harris College.

Westside was the highest finisher among the district's teams in ninth place with 317 points. Lamar came 11th with 343, one spot higher than Bellaire with 388.

Seven Lakes won the meet with 38 points, followed by Clear Lake with 86 and Strake Jesuit with 109.

The Wolves were led by John Rushing, who placed 39th with a time of 16:59.2. Gabe Cossio was 43rd in 17:02.4.

Westside's girls were 18th overall with 496 points. Kingwood claimed the girls' division with 31 points, with Cinco Ranch second with 57 and Clear Lake third with 81. Lamar was 13th with 386.

Diamond Dixon was Westside's top finisher in 48th in 12:42.7.
