Philadelphia Eagles Notes, Quotes 2009-02-07
--Defensive coordinator Jim Johnson has been diagnosed with cancer in his spine. He said he has a malignant tumor and has begun radiation treatments. Johnson had skin cancer in 2001. He will not require surgery and is expected to continue as defensive coordinator.

--The Eagles named Ted Daisher special teams coordinator, Rory Segrest defensive line coach and Doug Pederson offensive quality control coach. Pete Jenkins, the previous defensive line coach, announced his retirement.

--Eagles general manager Tom Heckert, who doesn't have final say in personnel decisions (Andy Reid does) initially was a candidate for the Cleveland Browns' GM job, but withdrew his name from consideration after the Browns hired Eric Mangini as their head coach. Last year, he was a finalist for the Atlanta Falcons GM job that went to Tom Dimitroff.

There is a sense that club president Joe Banner and owner Jeff Lurie would like Heckert to leave. Before the season, they fired Heckert's top lieutenant, Jason Licht, and replaced him with Howie Roseman, a lawyer who primarily had helped Banner with contracts and the salary cap. He has no background as a personnel man.

--Quarterback Donovan McNabb had two turnovers in the loss to Arizona, an interception and a fumble. He finished the season with 22 turnovers (15 interceptions, seven lost fumbles) in 19 games and 720 pass plays. That's a turnover every 32.7 pass plays, which is the second worst of his career, not counting his rookie season. McNabb entered the season with the second best career interception percentage in NFL history, behind only Neil O'Donnell.

--Even though they set the franchise record for scoring with 416 points and finished ninth in the league in total offense and sixth in passing, the Eagles again were a disappointment in the red zone. They finished 22nd in the league in red-zone offense and converted just eight of 23 opportunities inside the opponents' 20 in the last eight games, six of which they won. Go figure.
