Philadelphia Eagles Notes, Quotes 2008-07-29
--Running back Brian Westbrook, who wants a new and improved contract after leading the league in yards from scrimmage last season, reported to training camp on time last week. Whether he stays may depend on how negotiations go between the Eagles and Westbrook's new agent, Todd France. The Eagles have acknowledged that the Pro Bowl running back has outperformed the five-year, $25 million extension he signed in November 2005. But there's been little progress toward a new deal thus far. He already is due to count close to $15.5 million against the salary cap the next three years.

--Andy Reid has started a "30-plus club" this year. All veterans who are at least 30 years old will be given the morning practice off every third day. Asked whether he liked the 30-plus club, 34-year-old FS Brian Dawkins said: "Absolutely. I love it. If you give me a couple of days here or there to sit out and relax a little bit, I'll take it. I'm not one of those guys who is scared to tell people my age. I'm 34 and I'm happy to be 34. When I get on the field, I don't know what a 34-year-old player is supposed to play like. But that's not in my mindset. All I know is, if the ball is in the air, I have to get it. If a big hit has to be made, I'm going to make it. If I have to go through somebody to get to the quarterback, I'm going to do it. But as far as taking time off, I'll take it every time. Every time."

--CB Lito Sheppard fired agents Lamont Smith and Peter Schaffer and replaced them with Drew Rosenhaus. He's hoping Rosenhaus will be able to either persuade the Eagles to give him a new contract or get him traded. The latter seems more likely than the former at the moment, although the reason the Eagles have had so much difficulty trading Sheppard is because no one else is interested in giving a new contract to a guy who has missed 14 games the last three years and still has four years left on his current deal. "I want to go out and show everybody that I'm healthy and I am who I say I am," Sheppard said. "I want to show I can still play the game at a high level, so I'm going to let that speak for itself."

--Club president Joe Banner said he's not overly concerned about the contract squabbles the Eagles are having with RB Brian Westbrook and CB Lito Sheppard. "Your goal is to have everybody on the team feel good about everything," Banner said. "The reality is you have 80 guys in camp and 53 making your final roster. So there are going to be some situations and it varies how people react to them. The Giants won the Super Bowl last year, and (Michael) Strahan sat out all of camp. Osi Umenyiora and (Plaxico) Burress were asking for new contracts. They did their best to get them. In some cases, they got them, and in some cases they didn't. But they all kind of sucked it up and did their best for the team."

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Night and day. It's not even a comparison. Not even close. My whole mindset -- we all know the story -- but my whole mindset, physically, mentally, spiritually, everywhere, was all on a different page last year. My concentration is fully on training (this year) and getting my body back in shape to be whatever I need to be for this defense." -- FS Brian Dawkins, on how he would compare himself now to last season.
