Philadelphia Eagles Notes, Quotes 2008-12-28
--Just when it looked like Andy Reid finally was coming around to understanding the importance of running the ball, he threw it 46 times and ran it 16 in Sunday's 10-3 loss to the Washington Redskins. Of 43 second-half plays, just five were running plays. Reid said the reason the Eagles threw the ball so much was because the Redskins played with eight defenders in the box most of the game. "We were backed up and trying to make some things happen," Reid said. "We took some shots in there and at the time, we weren't running it quite as effectively as we would have liked to. But we probably could have stuck with it (the run) a little bit more." Running back Brian Westbrook averaged 4.1 yards per carry in the first half. He ran the ball just four times in the second half.

--After converting 33 of 50 third-down opportunities in consecutive wins over Arizona, the New York Giants and Cleveland that vaulted them back into the NFC playoff hunt, the Eagles were just 3-for-14 on third down in Sunday's 10-3 loss to the Washington Redskins, including 2-for-6 from five yards or less. In their three previous games, the Eagles had converted 22 of 26 third downs of five yards or less. "We weren't able to convert third downs like we have been in previous games," said quarterback Donovan McNabb. Five of the Eagles' 12 possessions against the Redskins were three-and-outs. Said offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg: "We weren't very good at it (converting third downs)."

--Rookie DeSean Jackson has caught a team-high 60 passes this season. But he has been a non-factor in both losses to the Redskins. He had just two catches for 14 yards Sunday and had only one catch for 8 yards in an earlier 23-17 loss. Jackson should have been a factor Sunday. He dropped two big passes from Donovan McNabb, including one in the end zone with about a minute left that would have tied the game.

"I'll take the blame," Jackson said. "I felt I should have caught the passes." Earlier in the game, Jackson suffered a rib injury when he went up for a pass from McNabb and was drilled in the back by Redskins safety LaRon Landry. "Obviously I took a nice little hit," Jackson said. "I just tried to come back and fight for my team. I wasn't in the place I wanted to be. It's the game we play. You're not always going to feel healthy. You're not always going to feel great."

BY THE NUMBERS: 22 - Number of sacks the Eagles have allowed this season. If they don't give up any sacks Sunday against the Cowboys, they will equal the franchise record for fewest sacks since the league went to a 16-game season in 1978. The '82 team allowed 22 sacks.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Yeah, you guys aren't very creative." -- Coach Andy Reid when asked if he gets tired of answering the same questions after an Eagles loss.
