Philadelphia Eagles Strategy and Personnel 2009-02-16
With quarterbacks coach Pat Shurmur taking the offensive coordinator job on Steve Spagnuolo's staff in St. Louis and defensive line coach Pete Jenkins retiring, the Eagles made several coaching moves.

James Urban, 35, will replace Shurmur as the quarterbacks coach. He spent the last two seasons as the team's offensive assistant/quality control coach. Before that, he was the assistant to the head coach for three years.

Rory Segrest, who had been the team's special teams coordinator, will replace Jenkins as the defensive line coach. Ted Daisher will take over the special teams. He spent the last two years as the special teams boss for the Cleveland Browns.

The Eagles also hired former quarterback Doug Pederson as offensive quality control coach. He had spent the last four years coaching high school football in Louisiana.

The Eagles have seven players who can become unrestricted free agents, including three longtime starters - left tackle Tra Thomas, right tackle Jon Runyan and free safety Brian Dawkins. Dawkins, 35, has lost a step, but had a solid season in Jim Johnson's defense. He wants to return and the Eagles seem to want him back.

It will be interesting to see what the Eagles do with Thomas and Runyan. Thomas has been protecting Donovan McNabb's blindside since the quarterback was a rookie. He played well this season and there is no clear replacement on the roster right now. Runyan's a different story. He had microfracture surgery on his knee earlier this month and will be out for at least four months. The Eagles have the option of sliding right guard Shawn Andrews outside to replace him. Joselio Hanson, the team's capable nickel corner, also is an unrestricted free agent. The Eagles want to re-sign him, but he is expected to attract interest from teams that could offer him a starting opportunity and starter's money.

1. Offensive tackle: Both of their starting tackles are in their mid-30s and are unrestricted free agents. There are no obvious replacements on the premises.

2. Running back: Brian Westbrook is 30 and has a degenerative knee. The Eagles need to bring in someone, preferably a bigger guy, who can share the load with him.

3. Tight end: The Eagles have no intention of re-signing L.J. Smith. Brent Celek is developing into a decent pass-catcher, but he's not much of a blocker. Eagles need someone to compliment him.

MEDICAL WATCH: DE Darren Howard had abdominal surgery late last month, but is expected to make a full recovery and should be fine by the spring minicamps.

--RT Jon Runyan, who is an unrestricted free agent, had microfracture surgery on his knee and will be on the shelf for at least four months.

--RB Brian Westbrook didn't need surgery on his injured knee. He's been rehabbing it.

--RB Correll Buckhalter had a solid season as Brian Westbrook's backup, but the Eagles probably will bring in someone younger to replace him.

--S Sean Considine was replaced last season at SS by Quintin Mikell. But he was one of the team's better special teams players. Might return in that role.

--S Brian Dawkins still is a productive player in Jim Johnson's defense and wants to finish his career with the Eagles. Probably will be back.

--CB Joselio Hanson has developed into an excellent nickel corner, but there are probably going to be teams that will offer him a starting opportunity. Probably won't be back.

--OT Jon Runyan had microfracture surgery on his knee after playing hurt the entire season. Unlikely he'll be re-signed.

--TE L.J. Smith was franchised by the team last year. They won't make the same mistake twice. Definitely won't be back.

--OT Tra Thomas still is a productive LT despite his age. Eagles don't really have a successor in the wings. Probably will be re-signed.

--WR Hank Baskett's production tailed off in the second half of the season. But at 6-4, he's a big target for Donovan McNabb. Will likely be back as the team's No. 4 wideout.

--G Nick Cole replaced Max Jean-Gilles, who replaced Shawn Andrews at right guard and played well. If Eagles move Andrews to right tackle, Cole likely will be the starter inside, ahead of Jean-Gilles.
