Philadelphia Eagles Strategy and Personnel 2008-08-13
--G Shawn Andrews reported to training camp on Sunday and was immediately placed on the team's physically unable to perform list. He'll be taken off that as soon as he is able to return to practice.

--DT Kimo von Oelhoffen, who has been sidelined for more than two weeks with knee inflammation, was released. The Eagles left the door open for his re-signing if/when the knee gets better. But they needed another healthy training camp body at tackle.

--G Max Jean-Gilles, who started at right guard against Pittsburgh Friday night in place of absent Shawn Andrews, will continue to work with the first unit for the time being, even though Andrews is back.

--DE Victor Abiamiri, who suffered a dislocated wrist two weeks ago that required surgery, has not been put on injured reserve. The Eagles have said the worst-case scenario for his return would be four months. But they remain hopeful he will be able to make it back sooner than that.

--DE Juqua Parker started at left end against the Steelers. He likely will rotate there with Chris Clemons until Victor Abiamiri returns.

--DE Jerome McDougle, who was given little chance to make the Eagles' roster, has had a very good camp and played well in the Eagles' first preseason game against Pittsburgh. The odds of him making the team still are stacked against him.

BATTLE OF THE WEEK: Jason Davis, Luke Lawton and Jed Collins for starting fullback job. Davis, who is in his third year with the Eagles after spending '06 on injured reserve and '07 on the practice squad, appears to have the upper hand. He started against Pittsburgh in the Eagles' first preseason game and caught a touchdown pass from Donovan McNabb. But Collins got a lot of work Sunday with the first-team offense. Reid said Collins played better than Davis and Lawton on special teams Friday night against Pittsburgh, and he said special teams play will be instrumental in his decision on which fullback to keep.

OTHER BATTLE FRONTS: Greg Lewis, Jason Avant and Hank Baskett for the final two wide receiver jobs. Reggie Brown and Kevin Curtis will be the starters and rookie DeSean Jackson also is in ... Correll Buckhalter, Tony Hunt and Ryan Moats for the third RB job behind Brian Westbrook and Lorenzo Booker. Buckhalter seems to have a comfortable lead in this battle.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: WR DeSean Jackson. The rookie was impressive in his first NFL appearance, catching five passes for 51 yards and displaying excellent yards-after-the-catch ability. He was held in check on three punt returns, gaining a total of three yards.

ROOKIE REPORT: DT Trevor Laws (second round) looked good in the Eagles' first preseason game against Pittsburgh. He had four tackles and notched the Eagles' only sack ... WR DeSean Jackson (second round) appears to be picking up the offense quickly. He had five catches for 51 yards against the Steelers, though he was held in check on three punt returns ... S Quintin Demps (fourth round), who is being used at both safety and corner, had one punt return for 12 yards against the Steelers ... LB Andy Studebaker (sixth round) is doing a pretty good job making the transition from defensive end to strong-side linebacker. He was in on three tackles and defended a pass against the Steelers ... LB Joe Mays (sixth round) had a very good game against the Steelers. He led the team in tackles with six, and played well at the point of attack.

INJURY REPORT: CB Asante Samuel returned to practice Sunday after sitting out the first three weeks of camp with a hamstring injury ... It's still not clear how long DE Victor Abiamiri (dislocated wrist) will be out. Worst-case scenario is four months. Eagles have yet to say what the best-case scenario is ... DT Montae Reagor is sidelined with knee inflammation. With Dan Klecko playing well, Reagor could eventually get cut if he can't stay healthy.
