Philadelphia Eagles Strategy and Personnel 2008-08-22
--WR Greg Lewis is expected to rotate with Greg Lewis in the spot vacated by Hank Baskett, who will miss an undetermined amount of time due to surgery for a sports hernia.

--RG Shawn Andrews, who missed all of training camp and both of the Eagles' first two preseason games while dealing with clinical depression, could see his first game action Friday. "Shawn is going to give it a go, and we'll just see how he does," coach Andy Reid said. (We're) going to try to keep good communication with him during the game and give him an opportunity to play."

--WR Reggie Brown, who was out for more than a week with Achilles tendinitis, now is sidelined with a hamstring injury. It's uncertain whether he'll play this week against the Patriots.

--DE Victor Abiamiri, who is recovering from a broken wrist, doesn't think it will be necessary for the team to put him on injured reserve. He said the wrist is healing nicely and he thinks he'll be back long before the four-month worst-case scenario coach Andy Reid initially painted.

--RB Lorenzo Booker has yet to be paired in the same backfield with Brian Westbrook in the first two preseason games. But the Eagles have used a package with both of them in it quite often in practice.

--S Quintin Demps will get more work returning kickoffs after Lorenzo Booker dropped two kickoff returns and couldn't find the handle on another one last week against Carolina. Demps has outstanding straight-line speed that would seem to make him an ideal kickoff return candidate.

BATTLE FRONTS: Jerome McDougle vs. Darren Howard for the final DE spot. McDougle appeared to be a dead man walking going into camp. But he has played well. Howard may have the upper hand because of his ability to play tackle in the Eagles' nickel packages ... Lorenzo Booker vs. rookie Quintin Demps for the kickoff return job. Booker had first dibs on the job, even though he never had returned kickoffs before. But he dropped three kickoffs last week against Carolina. Demps, who has 4.39 speed, returned kickoffs at Texas-El Paso.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: RB Tony Hunt. He had a 51-yard touchdown run against Carolina, also made a nice one-handed shoestring catch on a pass from Kevin Kolb, and played well on special teams.

ROOKIE REPORT: DT Trevor Laws (2nd round) has impressed the coaching staff with his ability to play through bumps and bruises. He will be part of the team's four-man DT rotation ... WR DeSean Jackson (2nd round) continues to have a solid camp and preseason. He's got 12 catches in the first two preseason games and had a 27-yard punt return against Carolina ... S Quintin Demps (4th round) has played well at both cornerback and safety. He's also getting more work as a kickoff returner. He is expected to be one of the four safeties the Eagles keep on their roster ... OT King Dunlap (7th round) has shown promise as a left tackle. At 6-8, 310 pounds, he's enormous, but has shown good footwork. Right now, he's backing up starter Tra Thomas, though left guard Todd Herremans would move to LT if Thomas was unable to play.

INJURY REPORT: WR Kevin Curtis (sports hernia) is set to undergo surgery. There is no timetable for his return. ... WR Reggie Brown is having trouble staying healthy. He was sidelined for more than a week with Achilles tendinitis, then suffered a hamstring strain last week against Carolina that could keep him out of this week's game against New England ... DE Victor Abiamiri (broken wrist) is optimistic that he'll be back a lot sooner than the four-month worst-case scenario painted by Andy Reid ... DT Montae Reagor underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee. The Eagles aren't sure how long he'll be out. It's possible he could be waived-injured or placed on injured reserve ... DE Chris Clemons is day-to-day with a calf strain.
