--RB Tony Hunt started at fullback Friday night against the New England Patriots and played well. His move to fullback means, among other things, that the Eagles probably will use him as a ball carrier in short-yardage situations.

--FB Luke Lawton was released Saturday. That leaves the Eagles with just two other fullbacks on their roster -- Jason Davis and rookie Jed Collins -- besides Tony Hunt, who has been moved from running back to fullback.

--DE Victor Abiamiri, who is recovering from a broken wrist, doesn't think it will be necessary for the team to put him on injured reserve. He said the wrist is healing nicely and he thinks he'll be back long before the four-month worst-case scenario coach Andy Reid initially painted.

BATTLE FRONTS: Jerome McDougle vs. Darren Howard for the final DE spot. McDougle appeared to be a dead man walking going into camp. But he has played well. Howard may have the upper hand because of his ability to play tackle in the Eagles' nickel packages ... Lorenzo Booker vs. rookie Quintin Demps for the kickoff return job. Booker had first dibs on the job, even though he never had returned kickoffs before. But he dropped three kickoffs last week against Carolina. Demps, who has 4.39 speed, returned kickoffs at Texas-El Paso.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: RB Tony Hunt. He had a 51-yard touchdown run against Carolina, also made a nice one-handed shoestring catch on a pass from Kevin Kolb, and played well on special teams.

ROOKIE REPORT: DT Trevor Laws (2nd round) has impressed the coaching staff with his ability to play through bumps and bruises. He will be part of the team's four-man DT rotation ... WR DeSean Jackson (2nd round) continues to have a solid camp and preseason. ... KR Quintin Demps cemented his position as the team's season-opening kickoff returner with a 101-yard kickoff return Friday night against New England. ... OT King Dunlap (7th round) has shown promise as a left tackle. At 6-8, 310 pounds, he's enormous, but has shown good footwork. Right now, he's backing up starter Tra Thomas, though left guard Todd Herremans would move to LT if Thomas was unable to play.

INJURY REPORT:

--WR Kevin Curtis had surgery to repair a sports hernia late last week. The Eagles don't know when he'll return, but it may not be until midseason.

--S Brian Dawkins suffered what the club is calling a mild tendon strain in his ankle against the Patriots. They are hopeful he'll be able to play in the Sept. 7 season opener against St. Louis.

--C Jamaal Jackson suffered a mild concussion in the New England game. He won't play in the final preseason game against the Jets, but is expected to be ready for the season opener.

--WR Reggie Brown, who was out for more than a week with Achilles tendinitis, now is sidelined with a hamstring injury. It's uncertain whether he'll play in the preseason finale.
