Philadelphia Eagles Strategy and Personnel 2008-10-24
The Eagles finally acquired a true fullback this week when they signed Kyle Eckel. They started the season with a converted running back, Tony Hunt, as their only fullback. Then, before their Week 5 game against Washington, they moved defensive tackle Dan Klecko to fullback. A week later, they released Hunt. Coach Andy Reid said Klecko will remain the team's starting fullback.

For the first time this season, the Eagles will be at full strength at wide receiver. With Kevin Curtis and Reggie Brown returning this week, all six of their wideouts will be available. It's uncertain whether Reid will activate all six Sunday. Brown still hasn't completely recovered from his groin injury and will play only a limited amount of snaps. If Reid decides to dress just six wideouts, the odd man out would be either Jason Avant or Greg Lewis. Both play on the special teams.

PLAYER NOTES

--WR Reggie Brown's chances of playing Sunday are getting slimmer. Brown, who missed the last game with a groin injury, has been able to practice only on a limited basis the last two days.

--DE Juqua Parker, who is nursing a sore knee, practiced for the second straight day and is expected to play Sunday. Parker leads the team with 4.5 sacks.

--WR Kevin Curtis will make his first appearance of the season Sunday after missing the first six games recovering from a sports hernia. He said the injury has completely healed and he won't be hindered at all.

--RB Brian Westbrook is expected to have his fractured ribs well-protected Sunday. Westbrook will play against Atlanta. He has only been healthy for 11 of 24 quarters this season. First he injured his ankle, then his ribs.

--CB Lito Sheppard's hamstring has healed well enough for him to practice the last two days. He is expected to play Sunday against Atlanta.

--RG Shawn Andrews, who already has missed four games with a herniated disk, will miss at least six more after having surgery this week. Eagles will wait a few weeks before deciding whether to put him on injured reserve.

--FB Dan Klecko will remain the team's starting fullback, despite the signing earlier this week of Kyle Eckel. Eckel is a true blocking fullback, while Klecko was moved to offense from defensive tackle.

GAMEPLAN: The pass-happy Eagles have thrown 35-plus passes in five of their six games, and they almost certainly will make it six of seven Sunday against a Falcon defense that has just 10 sacks and has allowed 8.2 yards per attempt and six touchdown passes in their last three games.

MATCHUPS TO WATCH: Eagles LT Tra Thomas vs. Falcons RDE John Abraham -- Thomas is one of the best blindside pass-protectors in the league. Abraham has seven of the Falcons' 10 sacks.

Eagles MLB Stewart Bradley vs. Falcons RB Michael Turner: Turner, the league's No. 2 rusher, is a north-south power runner. Bradley is a physical, downhill run-stopper.

Eagles LCB Asante Samuel vs. Falcons WR Roddy White: White is QB Matt Ryan's go-to receiver, which could give Samuel some interception opportunities.

INJURY IMPACT: With Andrews out for at least another six weeks after undergoing back surgery, Max Jean-Gilles will remain the team's starting right guard for the foreseeable future. Jean-Gilles isn't as good as Pro Bowler Andrews, but he's done a solid job in his four starts so far this season.
