Philadelphia Eagles Strategy and Personnel 2008-10-30

Philadelphia Eagles Strategy and Personnel 2008-10-30
The Eagles traded a third-round pick to the Miami Dolphins for running back Lorenzo Booker on Draft Day, but Booker is getting very little playing time. He's backing up Brian Westbrook and Correll Buckhalter and was on the field for just three plays last week. He's got just 18 touches in the first seven games.

Even though Reggie Brown is expected to return this week after missing four of the first seven games with injuries, his playing time likely will be reduced. Brown and Kevin Curtis were the team's starting wideouts last season. But the emergence of rookie DeSean Jackson, along with Brown's injuries, have changed that. Curtis, who made his first appearance of the season last week after missing the first six games recovering from sports hernia surgery, played 59 of 68 snaps in the Eagles' win over the Falcons. Jackson, who also is the team's punt returner, played 50 snaps. No other Eagles wideout played more than 36 snaps.

PLAYER NOTES

--TE L.J. Smith didn't practice Wednesday. He suffered a concussion in Sunday's win over Atlanta and is very questionable for this week's game against Seattle.

--TE Brent Celek could get his second start of the season Sunday if L.J. Smith isn't able to play. Smith suffered a concussion last week against Atlanta. Celek started for Smith in a 24-20 Week 4 loss to the Bears. Smith missed that game with a back injury.

--WR Jason Avant was a limited participant in practice Wednesday. He strained his trapezius muscle Sunday against Atlanta trying to catch a Donovan McNabb pass behind him.

--WR Reggie Brown, who has missed four of the first seven games with injuries, participated fully in practice Wednesday and is expected to play this week. He has missed the last two games with a groin injury.

--RB Brian Westbrook's fractured ribs suffered no more damage Sunday. Westbrook rushed for a career-high 167 yards in the game. He practiced Wednesday and will play Sunday against Seattle.

GAME PLAN: With backup Seneca Wallace expected to start at quarterback for injured Matt Hasselbeck Sunday, the Eagles' top defensive priority will be shutting down the Seahawks' ground game on first and second down, then turning up the heat on Wallace, who will be making just his seventh career start. Offensively, the Eagles figure to air it out early and often against a Seattle defense that has given up 7.97 yards per pass attempt.

MATCHUPS TO WATCH: Eagles RT Jon Runyan vs. Seahawks LDE Patrick Kerney -- Kerney leads the Seahawks with 5 sacks.

Eagles RDE Trent Cole vs. Seahawks LT Walter Jones: Jones is an eight-time Pro Bowler and four-time first-team All Pro.

Eagles WRs DeSean Jackson and Kevin Curtis vs. Seahawks CBs Marcus Trufant and Josh Wilson: Eagles wideouts have 90 receptions, but just three TDs

INJURY IMPACT: Pro Bowl RG Shawn Andrews continues to recover from back surgery. The Eagles have not put him on injured reserve yet. They still are hopeful that he might be able to return in early December. Max Jean-Gilles has started in his place since Week 3.

--WR Reggie Brown is expected back this week after missing four of the first seven games with injuries.

--If TE L.J. Smith (concussion) can't play this week, which is a very real possibility, Brent Celek will start.
