Philadelphia Eagles Strategy and Personnel 2008-12-13

Philadelphia Eagles Strategy and Personnel 2008-12-13
The Eagles have reduced the number of wide receivers they're using in their personnel groupings. They had been suiting up six wideouts but reduced it to four the past two games. One of the odd men out was former starter Reggie Brown. The Eagles primarily use rookie DeSean Jackson and Kevin Curtis in two-wide receiver sets, and Jackson, Curtis and Jason Avant in four-wide sets. They also mix in Hank Baskett, who is their best blocking wide receiver.

PLAYER NOTES

--RB Brian Westbrook practiced Friday and is listed as probable for Sunday's game. He has been playing through ankle and knee injuries and is coming off a career-high 39 touches last weekend.

--RB Correll Buckhalter practiced on a limited basis Thursday. He has missed the last two games with a knee sprain. He'll probably be listed as questionable for Monday night.

--WR Kevin Curtis, who suffered a concussion in Sunday's win over the Giants, was able to practice Friday and is listed as probable for Monday's game.

--TE L.J. Smith didn't practice Thursday. He suffered a knee contusion in Sunday's win over the Giants. Smith had a season-high six catches in the game. He is expected to play this week.

--RT Jon Runyan practiced Thursday with a sore knee. Runyan will play Monday night against Cleveland.

--G Shawn Andrews still hasn't been placed on injured reserve. He's recovering from back surgery and the Eagles still are hopeful he'll be able to play again this season if they make they make the playoffs.

--WR Reggie Brown, who was a healthy inactive Sunday for the first time in his career, could find himself in that situation again Monday night unless Kevin Curtis is unable to play because of his concussion.

GAME PLAN: For the first time in the Andy Reid era, the Eagles have run the ball 40-plus times in back-to-back games, including a season-high 41 last week against the Giants. It's not likely they'll run it that much Monday night against the Browns, but with Brian Westbrook healthy again, they'll try to strike a reasonable run-pass balance against a team that is ranked 28th in the league against the run.

MATCHUPS TO WATCH: Eagles C Jamaal Jackson vs. Browns NT Shaun Rogers -- This will be Jackson's toughest matchup against a 3-4 nose tackle this season.

INJURY IMPACT: WR Kevin Curtis suffered a concussion in the third quarter of Sunday's win over the Giants and didn't return to the game. It's probably 50-50 whether he plays Monday night against the Browns. If Curtis can't go, Hank Baskett would replace him as the "Z" receiver in most of the Eagles' two- and three-wide receiver sets.
