PRO FOOTBALL: WEEK 17 BREAKDOWN

PRO FOOTBALL: WEEK 17 BREAKDOWN
The Panthers face a tough challenge in that no NFC South team has won a divisional road game this year. However, the Panthers must beat the Saints at the Superdome to win the division and get the No. 2 playoff seed and a bye week. A Falcons loss would do the same, but the Falcons are playing the Rams at home. If the Panthers lose and the Falcons win, the Falcons get the coveted bye. Hard to imagine that the Panthers are just a week removed from playing the Giants for the No. 1 seed and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

Giants at Vikings

* 1 p.m.

The Vikings have everything to play for. The Giants have nothing to play for. The Vikings must win, or have the Bears lose, to clinch the NFC North division and the No. 3 playoff seed. The Giants have already clinched the top seed and home-field advantage. There will be no quarterback controversy in Minnesota. Despite a turnover-plagued loss last week, Tarvaris Jackson starts.

Cowboys at Eagles

* 4:15 p.m.

Despite last week's loss to the Ravens, the Cowboys still control their playoff destiny --- win and they are in. In fact, the Cowboys can earn the No. 5 seed with a win and a Falcons loss, and would play at Arizona on the opening weekend. The Eagles still have faint playoff hopes. They earn a wild-card spot with a win, a Buccaneers loss and a loss by either the Vikings or the Bears. Bet they regret that tie against the Bengals.

Dolphins at Jets

* 4:15 p.m.

The Dolphins control their playoff destiny --- win and they are the AFC East champs. This coming off last year's 1-15 season. They also would eliminate the Jets, who had such high hopes with Brett Favre only weeks ago. Oh, and a quarterback named Chad Pennington gets a chance to stick it to the team that dumped him for Favre. The Jets, losers of three of their past four, must win and have the Patriots lose.

Broncos at Chargers

* 8:15 p.m.

You can see why the league used its flexible schedule to move this game to Sunday night. It's a classic head-to-head matchup with a playoff berth on the line. The winner captures the AFC West and the No. 4 seed. The game is a rematch of Week 2, when the Broncos won --- getting a winning two-point conversion --- after an officiating error allowed them to keep a fumble.

THE OTHER WEEK 17 GAMES

Game; Comment

Patriots at Bills; The Patriots can capture the AFC East with a win and a Dolphins loss to the Jets.

Chiefs at Bengals; Who cares? A thrilling battle of the two worst teams in the AFC, with a combined five wins.

Lions at Packers; Does anyone really doubt that the Lions will lose and finish 0-16, the worst record in NFL history?

Bears at Texans; The Bears can win the NFC North with a win and a Vikings loss. They can still earn a wild card.

Titans at Colts; The Titans, No. 1 seed, and Colts, No. 5, may meet again in a few weeks in the AFC playoffs.

Browns at Steelers; Romeo Crennel's job is in jeopardy, and Brady Quinn got punched by a teammate.

Raiders at Buccaneers; The Bucs can make with the playoffs as a wild card with a win and a Cowboys loss. Jaguars at Ravens; It's very simple for the Ravens --- win and they are the final wild-card team in the AFC.

Seahawks at Cardinals; The only thing that matters in this game: Will the Cards stop limping into the playoffs?

Redskins at 49ers; Eat your holiday turkey leftovers and maybe you will be asleep for this game.
